Dr. Ezra Spira-Cohen

Ezra received his PhD from Tulane University in Political Science. Before coming to New Orleans, Ezra attended Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut, where he majored in Comparative Development and studied Spanish and Human Rights. Ezra also lived in Brazil for more than four years, where he received his MA in Sociology from Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro. His experiences growing up in Western Massachusetts sparked his interest in land and environmental issues, as well as the close interaction between rural and urban communities. His academic research focuses on social movements, land tenure, agriculture, institutional capacity, and he specializes in Latin American politics. Ezra is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and is also a musician and dancer. He is passionate about teaching social science and, before becoming faculty at Bard Early College, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Tulane University.
